Have you ever concidered a greyhound or a lurcher as a pet? Do you know they make fantastic house pets? Greyhounds and lurchers are often overlooked in Ireland as pets, there are some common myths that make people avoid them - they need loads of exercise, they dont make good house dogs, they are aggressive, and so on. These simply aren't true! Greyhounds are actually quite lazy, they like to go out for a couple of short walks a day and a quick run and then want to get back to their beds. They were bred for short bursts of speed and then to relax for the rest of the day. They dont particularily like getting wet so might not even want walk on a very wet day! They make fabulous house dogs, they want a comfy bed and will spend most of the day there! If given the chance they'd love to be up on the couch with you, or in your bed! Due to their short coat they dont shed too much either so you wont be cleaning hairs off your furniture all day. Lurchers and greyhounds are some of the gentlest dogs around, they quietly ask for affection and rarely jump up or demand loudly.
Generally greyhounds dont do too much jumping, so dont really escape. You do need a fenced garden because they will chase something if it gets their attention. For this reason it's not a good idea to walk your lurcher off the lead unless you are in a secure area because they will run directly after whatever catches their attention without regard for traffic, people or safety. Lurchers and greyhounds are generally good with children, they gently look for attention so their size isnt normally a problem for most children. Like any other dogs, some greyhounds are good with cats and small animals, but a lot aren't, so this needs to be taken into account.
So why not consider a greyhound or lurcher? At the moment we have 3, Lurcher Elmo is an affectionate boy who likes to spend most of his time in the kitchen waiting for some food to come his way, he loves people and gets on well with the other dogs, he likes to play chase and then sleep! Oisin is a 4 year old lurcher who is very lazy! He has a couple of kennels and only seems to get more active in the afternoon when he has spent all morning sleeping. He is a gentle soul who wants his own forever home. Emma is a greyhound who was found as a stray. She is the gentlest dog we have and loves to be given love, she licks everyone if given the chance and likes to nibble and groom them! Again she spends most of the morning sleeping in the sun, or by the heater and gets up every so often to get a pet. When the other dogs get up a game of chasing, she might join in, then again she might just turn back over and go asleep!
